I typically stay way from politics, but as I remember there wasn’t even a vote on Seattle getting rid of Columbus Day?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for celebrating an Indigenous Peoples’ day,
but should we take away a holiday that is celebrated by many Italian/Americans, to add another?
Why not give them their own holiday exclusively? – there’s a whole lot of empty days on the calendar?
Sure, maybe all the “facts” about Christopher Columbus are not correct, and maybe the history books have excluded some of the more gruesome and unacceptable practices of that time period,
but if we go around abolishing every holiday that has a questionable origin, or includes a person with a checkered past,
we might not have any left?
(Ahem…….Thanksgiving, any Catholic holidays , Presidents’ day?…ect )
So lets celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day! –and all the rest, can we really have too much celebration?
